Indian national treasure and sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar is almost certainly the only classical musician to ever truly cross over into the mainstream. Can you even imagine the ’60s psychedelic movement without Ravi’s hypnotic ragas? For a while, it seemed like the hippies viewed any bit of Indian culture – music, meditation, yoga, Kama Sutra – as a kind of easy road to enlightenment. The irony is that the nirvana available through eastern culture lies in the years of dedication and study it entails. The western pop stars (especially George Harrison) that co-opted the sitar and trappings of Indian consciousness must’ve seemed comical to the true masters. This contract is from Pandit Shankar’s 1986 Montreal performance.
