BRIAN MAY - QUEEN
Brian May is not only the most distinctive-sounding guitarist in the history of popular music, he’s also a bona-fide astrophysicist. It’s true – Brian has a doctorate in astrophysics. His thesis was entitled,
A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud
. He also has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and in 2008, an asteroid was named after him. These are all amazing achievements, but they pale in comparison to his sartorial triumphs. On stage with Queen, Brian has stepped out in some of the most head-scratchingly bizarre outfits in rock – including this whimsical “Butterfly shirt”. Dr. May rocked it in the early ’70s.
JOHNNY ROTTEN - SEX PISTOLS
On display is a battered old Silvertone guitar that belonged to everyone’s favorite punk rock agitator - the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten. He signed it, “A True Star Was Here”.
PAUL STANLEY - KISS
The Starchild himself wore this leather vest during KISS’ ’70s heyday on the
Rock and Roll Over
tour. It is not subtle.
ROY ORBISON
No trip to Krakow is complete without a visit to the late, great Roy Orbison’s absolutely over-the-top blue and grey patent leather shoes. He rocked them in the ’60s.
KEITH MOON - THE WHO
These killer cowboy boots were a gift from Keith Moon to the Who’s light tech/production manager, John “Wiggy” Wolff. Apparently, Keith found them too narrow in the foot, so he gave them over to John, who also found them too confining. John Wolffe is a bit of a legend in his own right. He was instrumental in developing the Who’s mid-seventies laser show – the first large-scale use of lasers in rock.
BILLY DUFFY - THE CULT
The Krakow cafe is home to one of the more unusual guitars in our collection - a 1960 Supro Val Trol that belonged to the Cult’s Billy Duffy.
ELTON JOHN
Sir Elton has always rocked amazing eyewear and we’ve got a pair of red, white and blue shades he wore in the ’70s to prove it.
DEF LEPPARD
A lot of groups in the history of rock have overcome adversity and bad luck. Then there’s Sheffield, England’s pop-metal legends Def Leppard. In their thirty-plus year career, they’ve endured addiction, death, and their drummer, Rick Allen, lost an arm in a car crash. The man has one arm and he’s the drummer for one of the biggest rock bands in history! Wow. Through it all, the boys have managed to score dozens of chart-topping singles and sell nearly 75 million albums. Talent and perseverance pay dividends in the world of rock ’n’ roll. This Ovation acoustic was played and signed by the boys during their
7 Day Weekend
tour in the early ’90s.
PRINCE
Krakow is home to a pair of exceedingly tiny white lace gloves that were worn by Prince on the
Purple Rain
tour.
ROBERT PLANT - LED ZEPPELIN
Golden-throated Robert Plant used this golden AKG microphone during an awards show in 1980.
