Charlie Parker

Here's a great example of a great man's love for a great woman. Charlie “Bird” Parker wrote countless poems, letters, and notes to his beloved wife, Chan. This one is particularly lovely and touching.

Jimi Hendrix

Everyone knows that Hendrix is the undisputed master of the Stratocaster, but he owned quite a few Gibsons, too. This gorgeous '56 Les Paul Custom is one of the best. It's unusual that Jimi would use a single-cutaway guitar. When he flipped it over for left-handed playing, access to the upper frets would be seriously hampered. These old Pauls sound so damn good, though, that Jimi just dealt with it. He played this great vintage axe during his May 10th show at the Fillmore in 1968.

Louis Armstrong

Satchmo’s unbridled charisma and masterful chops flowed through this trumpet mouthpiece in 1971.

Otis Redding

The day of this show at the Factory in Madison, Wisconsin, Otis boarded a twin-engine Beechcraft airplane which crashed shortly after take-off – killing him, his manager, the pilot, and four members of the Bar-Kays. Posters for concerts that were canceled due to tragedy are always eerie, but when the opening act is called “The Grim Reapers,” it’s almost too macabre.
