Though Elvis starred in 31 films throughout his career, few were more than formulaic and somewhat forgettable. One big exception, however, was ‘Jailhouse Rock’. Released in 1957 at the height of Elvis’ power, the film features some of the best music and most charismatic moments in the King’s film career. The dance scene to the title track has become an American pop culture treasure and ‘Jailhouse Rock’ has been enshrined in the National Film Archives for posterity. This striped shirt was worn by Elvis throughout the film.
Check this shirt out. You’ve got to be Jimi Hendrix to sport something this badass and over the top. The Voodoo Child called it his “eyeball jacket” and it was designed by Chris Jagger (he’s got a brother named Mick – you may have heard of him). Jimi loved this shirt so much, he wore it on the cover of his first album, ‘Are You Experienced?’, and on his final studio release, Electric Ladyland. It’s hard to imagine a contemporary artist wearing the same clothes on two different albums – they’re all too uptight. This is one of the finest pieces in our collection.
Prince is such a pop icon that it’s easy to overlook the fact that he’s one of the best lead guitarists on the planet. Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Curtis Mayfield, he’s forged a style completely his own. The custom “Cloud Guitar” was his go-to instrument for much of his career. This example was used during his ‘Parade’ era.
